In this week's episode of Extreme Makeover: Wiener Edition, we feature Dunkel, Underdog to Wonderdog!

We saved this sweet guy from a kill shelter just minutes before he was to be "put down."  He had so many issues to deal with, the shelter deemed him "unadoptable" and put him on the list to euthanize.  We knew we were his only hope.  As one of our volunteers put it, what's one more "fixer upper"?  Dunkel was whisked away to one of our vets who revealed all this poor guy was dealing with - Heartworms, a grade 3 heart murmur, probably caused by the heartworms, an anal hernia, a back injury, skin issues, severely matted hair, and so little hair on the back half of his body that he had severe sunburn.  What is so sad is that all of his health issues were due to pure neglect by his owners.

Dunkel's been with his foster parents since mid-July and has made huge strides on his road to recovery.  As his body heals he is also learning to trust people again.  It's evident from the condition he was found in that humans had let him down in the past.  Now Dunkel's beautiful black fur is growing back in and his personality is starting to shine through.  He's a spunky boy with a strong will.  He made it through surgery and is about 1/3 of the way through a very slow method of heartworm treatment.  He should be ready to go to a forever home in about a month, preferably one with miminal steps and no small children.  If you'd like to learn more about this special guy, please email us or better yet, submit an adoption application!
